Clarity or Choices?
Life Doesn't Hand You Clarity. It Hands You Choices.
I was reminded of this in a very real way this week as one of my kids was navigating some pretty big life decisions.
We talked. We weighed the pros and cons. We looked at different possibilities. We asked questions, played out scenarios, talked about what could happen if this choice was made versus that one, and tried to find the clarity that would somehow make the "right" decision obvious.
And isn't that what we all want? We want clarity first. Just tell me which way to go. Show me the right answer. Give me enough information that I can know for sure.
But somewhere in the middle of those conversations, I was reminded of something I had recently read: Life doesn't hand you clarity, it hands you choices. And those choices, over time, reveal what you value most.
That stopped me. Because maybe we have the order wrong. Maybe clarity doesn't always come before the decision. Maybe sometimes clarity comes because of the decisions we make.
Life rarely hands us a perfectly marked path. Instead, it hands us choices. Some are big, life-changing choices like the ones we were discussing around our kitchen table. But most are much smaller.
Do I say yes or no?
Do I stay or go?
Do I speak or stay quiet?
Do I rest or keep pushing?
Do I react immediately or give myself a moment?
Do I spend my time here or there?
Do I keep doing what I've always done, or choose something different?
One choice may not seem significant. But choices compound. Over time, they begin to tell a story. They reveal what gets our time. What gets our energy. What we're willing to protect. What we're willing to release. What we keep returning to. And ultimately, what we value most.
As a mom, I wanted to help my child find the answer. I wanted to offer enough wisdom, ask enough questions, and weigh enough pros and cons that eventually the fog would lift and the decision would become obvious. But maybe my job wasn't to provide the clarity. Maybe it was to help create enough space for them to listen to themselves.
And isn't that exactly what a Yellow Light Moment is? The intentional space between stimulus and response where we pause long enough to choose instead of simply react.
YIELD: Slow down. You don't have to make every decision from urgency, fear, pressure, expectations, or what everyone else thinks you should do.
LISTEN: What matters to you? What are you trying to create? What are you being pulled toward? What choice aligns with your values, priorities, season, and the person you are becoming?
MOVE: Make the best choice you can with the information you have right now.
Not the perfect choice. Not the guaranteed choice. The intentional choice. Because sometimes there isn't a flashing sign telling us which direction to take. Sometimes we choose, take a step, learn something, adjust, and choose again. And slowly, the clarity begins to emerge.
Your Yellow Light Moment
Maybe you're facing a decision right now too. Instead of asking only "Which choice is right?" Pause long enough to ask "What does this choice reveal about what I value?" And maybe the harder question "Does this choice reflect what I say I value, or what I actually value?" Our calendars, habits, boundaries, relationships, attention, spending, rest, and priorities are quietly answering that question every day.
I couldn't give my child a crystal-clear answer this week. But perhaps that wasn't what they needed from me. Maybe what they needed was someone willing to sit in the uncertainty with them, ask good questions, help quiet some of the noise, and remind them that they don't have to have the next ten steps figured out. They just need to thoughtfully choose the next one. Because life doesn't always hand us clarity, it hands us choices. And choice by choice, step by step, we begin to discover what matters most and create a life that reflects it.
