Navigate Chronic Illness with Yellow Light Moments

Simple, supportive strategies for sleep, nutrition, self-care, and movement — one choice at a time.

Living with chronic illness can mean living with a body that doesn't always respond the same way from one day to the next.

Energy can change. Symptoms can flare. Sleep may not feel restorative. Food may affect you differently. Movement that felt good yesterday may be too much today. And sometimes simply managing appointments, medications, responsibilities, relationships, and everyday life can feel like a lot.

This Work Is Personal to Me

I have been living with chronic disease since 2017, so my connection to this work is both personal and professional.

I understand firsthand that living with chronic illness, specifically lupus, often requires learning how to listen to your body differently, adjust expectations, modify plans, and make decisions based on what you have available to give that day.

That personal experience led me to deepen my professional education and become a Certified Chronic Disease Specialist. My goal is to combine education with lived experience to help others find realistic, supportive strategies for navigating life with chronic illness.

I don't believe the answer is always to push harder.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is recognize the yellow light moment and respond to it.

That's exactly why Yellow Light Moments matter.

A Yellow Light Moment is the opportunity to recognize when something feels "off," pause before automatically pushing through, and ask: "What does my body need from me right now?"

You may not always be able to control the symptoms, circumstances, or limitations chronic illness brings into your day. But you can become more intentional about how you listen and respond to yourself within them.

That's why I created the YLM Toolbox for Chronic Illness — a simple, practical resource designed to help you pause, check in, and choose a supportive next step.

Here's How the YLM Toolbox Works

Step 1: YIELD

Recognize your yellow light moment and give yourself permission to pause.

Maybe you're more fatigued than usual. Your symptoms are increasing. You're overwhelmed, foggy, depleted, restless, or simply know that something doesn't feel right.

Instead of immediately pushing through, Yield.

Notice what your body is telling you.

Step 2: LISTEN

Check in before deciding what comes next.

Ask yourself:

What am I feeling?

What do I need?

Which area needs my attention right now: sleep, nutrition, self-care, or movement?

There's nothing to fix in this moment.

Start with awareness.

Step 3: MOVE

Choose one small, supportive next step.

"Move" doesn't always mean exercise.

It means move forward intentionally.

Your next step might be taking a short walk.

But it could also be drinking some water, eating something nourishing, taking five slow breaths, changing positions, asking for help, modifying your plans, shutting down your screens, or choosing to rest.

The goal isn't to do everything.

It's to choose one thing that supports what your body needs today.

Your Go-To YLM Toolbox for Chronic Illness

A menu of simple, adaptable strategies built around the four pillars of Yellow Light Moments

SLEEP

Support your rest and recovery.

For the days when you're exhausted, restless, or running on empty.

NUTRITION

Nourish your body and protect your energy.

For the days when you're depleted, nauseated, foggy, or low on energy.

SELF-CARE

Reclaim your clarity.

For the days when you're overwhelmed, overextended, or disconnected.

MOVEMENT

Move in a way that supports your body.

For the days when your body needs movement, mobility, or simply a change of position.

This isn't another list of things you're supposed to accomplish.

It's a toolbox.

Some days you'll reach for something in the Sleep section. Another day it might be Nutrition. Sometimes the most supportive choice will be Movement, and sometimes it will be Self-Care.

The right tool can change because your needs can change.
